The Clinton-Massie eighth grade girls basketball team defeated Greenfield 31-25 Thursday night.

The loss gives the young Lady Falcons a three-game winning streak. They have won four of their last five games, with the lone loss a one-point defeat to Leesburg.

Coach Joe Davis said contributing factors to the win streak have been free throw shooting and the team’s intensity.

Clinton-Massie lost to Greenfield 34-26 in the first meeting, Davis said.

On Thursday, McKenzie Avery led Massie with 18 points, including an 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line. Avery Cranmer added five points and Miranda Crawford toss in five. Natalie Lay and Amanda Wilson chipped in with two points each.

Davis said the eighth grade’s win streak began on his birthday, Jan. 12, when the Lady Falcons defeated East Clinton 27-13. Davis is a graduate of East Clinton High School.

Avery led CMMS with 17 points while Crawford dropped in 15 points. Ashley Gross had two points.

Davis said the CM seventh grade also defeated East Clinton that day with Pearl Spurlock and Ashley Doyle scoring eight points each for CM.

Following the 37-36 loss to Leesburg, Clinton-Massie eighth graders defeated Wilmington’s Rodger O. Borror Middle School 38-37. CM made 14 of 19 free throws in the win, Davis said.

Clinton-Massie defeated Washington 50-27 for the next win. The Blue Lions won the first meeting 40-28.

Avery had a season-best 24 points while Crawford scored 11. Lay and Cranmer had four points each. Wilson tossed in three. Lucie Payne and Holland Jaramillo had two points each.
