WC starts fast, falters late in 97-89 loss to Capital

COLUMBUS — The Wilmington College men’s basketball team was eliminated from post-season play Wednesday night with a 97-89 loss to Capital University in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

With only the top eight teams in the 10-team conference advancing to the league tournament, Wilmington is slotted in ninth place and unable to finish any higher.

The Quakers are 9-15 overall and 4-13 in conference play. WC has lost four of its last five games. Capital is 12-12 overall and 7-10 in the OAC.

Christian Jones led Wilmington in the scoring column with 27 points. The Hamilton High School product hit 6 of 9 three-pointers and was 9 for 13 shooting on the night. DJ Iles, from Fayetteville, had 15 points.

Capital posted five players in double figures with Joey Weingartner coming off the bench to lead the way with 19 points.

Needing to finish the season with two wins to make the OAC tournament, Wilmington came out like a team on a mission. Iles’ three-pointer just 2:08 into the game capped a 9-0 game-opening run. Nathan Scott’s trifecta at 14:30 pushed the difference to 22-6.

Capital battled to within three at the break, took the lead for good at the 16:30 mark and took control of the lead with a 20-4 run that made it 69-59.

Christian Jones’ three at 11:14 pulled WC within 72-68 then Jordan Jones’ hit a trey at 2:36 to cut the difference to 89-86. However, Wilmington made just 1 of 9 field goal attempts from that point on.
