OXFORD — Ricky Dungan is now in a wait and see mode.
The Wilmington High School sophomore posted two solids times in his events Friday at the Division II Southwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving Championship at Miami University’s Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Dungan will have to wait for results from other districts in the state to be completed before he knows whether a trip to Canton is in his future. The official listing of state qualifiers is expected to be posted on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website by Noon Sunday.
“I’m not too much of a nervous person,” Dungan said following the meet. “I’ve already done what I planned to do for the year.”
The top two finishers in each event at a district meet advance to the state meet. In addition, the top 16 times not in the top two of a district from around the state receive an at-large berth to the state meet.
None of the other WHS swimmers would appear to be in line for a state berth. Still, Hopf was pleased with the overall effort on Friday.
“I’m happy with where they’re at,” he said. “You always wish they were a tad bit faster at this point. But it’s all about racing the clock and they are doing that.”
Also for Wilmington, the 200-yard medley relay team of Dungan, Sam Osborn, Harrison Law and PJ Godsey clocked in with a 1:51.21, 20th overall.
In the 50 freestyle, Osborn finished in 23.63 seconds while Law posted a 60.3 second swim in the 100-yard butterfly.
Osborn then came back and swam the 100-yard freestyle in 52.27 seconds.
Dungan went 1:47.03 in the 200-yard freestyle event, finishing 10th overall. Last year, 1:48 was the slowest state qualifying time, Hopf said.
“He’s a free-spirit, a happy go lucky kid,” Hopf said of his sophomore sensation.
In the 500 free, Dungan came in with a time of 4:50.76, good enough for sixth overall.
“I was very happy with both (events),” Dungan said. “I dropped three seconds in both. For this time (of year) they are very good times.”
As for his chances to continue swimming in the orange and black another week, Dungan said, “Based off previous years, I have a pretty good chance.”
