Clinton County eateries inspected

WILMINGTON — The following information is obtained from the Clinton County Health Department and is compiled from inspection reports.

Violations are either critical or non-critical. Critical violations are more likely to contribute to food contamination, illness or an environmental health hazard, including inadequate cooking of food items or poor personal hygiene.

The following restaurants or food service establishments were inspected recently and violations/comments include:

• Gold Star Chili, 1295 Rombach Ave., Wilmington, June 12. Critical: Boxes of raw bacon were found stored above boxes of chili in wall in cooler. Hot dog: 119°F; hot dog #2 100°F (flat top grill). Hot TCS foods must be maintained 135°F or above to prevent pathogen growth that can cause illness. The consumer advisory reminder posted on breakfast menu is missing asterisks (to inform customer of increased risk of consuming undercooked/raw animal products). Air gap was not visible between equipment plumbing and facility drain at the prep sink and soda beverage equipment. Sanitizer solutions in use were not labeled on the storage container used to store wet cloths.

Employee beverage with no lid found stored on bottom shelf of prep table. Spoon was found in closed container of sour cream. Sauces/dressing in squeeze bottle missing labels. Top layer of cupped butter in container under counter reach-in cooler was missing cover. Cups of salt and pepper found on shelf with no cover or label. Plastic lid covering cheese at prep line had damage/melting. Boxes of to-go disposable containers found on floor in storage shed. Observed minor accumulations of grease at vent hood and fryer. Observed employee phone/personal items stored on top on soda bib rack and jacket stored on dry storage shelf.

Follow-up: July 10.

• Cowan Lake Commissary, 1756 Osborn Road, Wilmington, May 31. Level 2 certification unavailable. Critical: Orange push-up ice cream in retail sale freezer missing label information (ingredients, allergens, etc.). It is not labeled for individual sale. Ice cream in retail sale freezer, appears that the product had melted and re-froze.

Follow-up: June 16.

• Skyline, 2799 Rombach Ave., Wilmington, June 13. Critical: Chicken stored in walk-in cooler was uncovered. Food debris found in the bottom of reach-in freezer by back door.

Serving plates chipped in service line. Dumpster and area around waste storage has debris on asphalt. Debris on floor under drink fountains in lobby areas. Broken safety light in women’s restrooms.

Follow-up: July 6.

• Stephanie’s, 142 Main St., New Vienna, June 8. Critical: Sausage patties in reach-in cooler were at 44°F (must be kept below 41°F). There was a container of Alfredo sauce with a “use by” date of June 6.

The front is off of the Pepsi True reach-in cooler. The Pepsi cooler is missing light bulbs. The ceiling in the dry storage area is falling down. The floor in front of reach-in cooler gives with weight. There are several cracked tiles in front of service window and some in kitchen.

Follow-up: July 5.

• New Vienna 1st Stop, 101 N. South St., New Vienna, June 8. Follow-up. Critical: BBQ sandwich in warmer was at 130°F. (must be 135°F or above). The American cheese slices in the reach-in refrigerator were not dated.

The back room by the office and the dry storage area are made of unfinished pressboard. District manager is Class 2 food safety certified, but none in this facility.

Follow-up: July 5.

• Wilmington Veterans Post #49, 140 E. Locust St., Wilmington, June 12. Critical: Hose at mop sink was below flood level rim of sink. Backflow prevention device missing on system. Air gap was not visible under ice bin storage drain. Shuffleboard powder found next to clean plates and plastic utensils.

Residential non-commercial equipment used (stove/oven, blender, refrigerator, etc.). Ceiling in walk-in cooler was damaged (cracked?). Clean glasses found stored on cloths above beverage coolers. Equipment and disposable to-go supplies found on shelving with bottom shelf less than 6 inches from floor. Employee purse observed at counter with Bunn water brewer and/or beer cooler. Unnecessary items found stored in kitchen (pool sticks), and broken beer cooler/equipment at entry of building. Hat/hair restraints: Employee (person in charge) had long hair. Employee must properly maintain hair so it cannot contact food contact surfaces inadvertently.

Follow-up: July 31.

• Little Caesar’s, 1334 Rombach Ave., Wilmington, June 8. Follow-up. There is mildew/debris on the floor of the walk-in cooler along the back wall. There is food debris on 2 carts in walk-in (4 have been cleaned and look much better; thank you). The floor under dough mixer and prep table where it is portioned is dirty. The wall behind the 3-compartment sink is dirty. The caulking along the 3-compartment sink has black residue.
