WILMINGTON – Winning for the eighth time in its last 10 matches, the Wilmington High School tennis team defeated Clinton-Massie 4-1 Friday in a SBAAC American Division match on the WHS courts.

The match was originally scheduled for Sept. 13 but rain halted played with one match final and the others under suspension.

Wilmington came back and won all four courts on Friday. The lone Massie win was at third singles by Raelee Schulz.

CM coach Lynn Deartherage said five matches in five days was too much for her squad to overcome.

Wilmington is now 9-7 overall and 6-2 in the league. Clinton-Massie slips to 13-4 overall and 4-4 in the American.

Sophie Reed of WHS outlasted Nina Lazic 6-2, 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 at second singles. The Zane Bekheet and Kristina Walt doubles pairing picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Megan Wonderly and Jenn Callewaert.

Allie Kees had a key 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Anne Thompson at first singles.

“I was really proud of the way Allie and Sophie executed in such a big, dramatic match when all the pressure came down to them,” WHS head coach Doug Cooper said. “It was a little odd resuming a match that began over a week ago.”

Cooper said his team’s marathon stretch of matches comes as “we are playing our best tennis at the right time.”

Said Cooper, “We are now in a stretch of six matches in seven days, with trips to Western Brown, Beavercreek and hosting Goshen on Tuesday. After a day off, we host the conference tournament.”
