WEEK 7 PREVIEW: Western Brown at Clinton-Massie

Clinton-Massie’s regular season football domination continued last week as the Falcons opened its second run in the SBAAC.

A 62-0 win over Batavia – 4-1 coming into the game – offered little for the Falcons.

“It’s really hard to say if we got anything out of last week,” CM coach Dan McSurley said.

The CM defense gave up nine yards on the ground to the Bulldogs, a team that relies on its rushing attack. The CM offense, when the varsity squad was on the field, had just 22 snaps.

Clinton-Massie led 47-0 at halftime and netted 21 first downs on 38 offensive plays. Five players had more than 40 yards rushing for CM but none had more than 67. Christian Poynter, the top offensive player in the SBAAC at this time, had 53 yards and six rushes on just four carries against the Bulldogs.

This week, Clinton-Massie welcomes Western Brown to Frank M. Irelan Field for its annual Homecoming game. In years past, this would have been a good one. But the Broncos are down, coming in at 1-5.

Western Brown head coach Don Sizer said Clinton-Massie is physical, has a lot of depth and has a tradition of excellence on the gridiron.

Last week, the Broncos lost 56-0 to Goshen, who is unbeaten this season just like Clinton-Massie.

“Goshen was very prepared for us and beat us in every phase of the game,” Sizer said.

The Falcons have won 14 straight regular season games, dating back to a Week 2 loss to Turpin a season ago. The Mighty Men of McSurley have won 12 straight SBAAC home games, dating back to 2002.

Massie has scored 279 points while allowing just 33, an averaging final score of 46.5 to 5.5. Aside from Coldwater, 24-14, no team has been closer than 23 points to the vaunted Falcons.

Western Brown will be the biggest school Massie has played this season. The Division II Broncos, however, have just one victory.

Clinton-Massie has won 60 straight league games, SCOL and SBAAC combined. Massie has won its last 24 SBAAC games.

“Right now we’re just focused on conditioning and high-spirited practices,” McSurley said. “The kids are having a lot of fun and that’s why you play to begin with.”
