No. 2 Mount Union rolls on, defeats Wilmington 66-7

WILMINGTON – No. 2 Mount Union scored touchdowns on its first five possessions Saturday en route to a 66-7 win over Wilmington in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Townsend Field.

The Purple Raiders (7-0, 6-0 OAC), who have 12 NCAA Division III football championships, along with 27 OAC titles, eclipsed the 60-point barrier for the third time in seven games. Wilmington dropped its fourth consecutive game and falls to 2-5 overall, 1-5 in OAC games.

In the eyes of Wilmington College head football coach Bryan Moore, the main factor is how his squad recovers from the loss. He realizes the type of power house Mount Union has become over the past three decades.

“What really matters is what we become in the process,” Moore said. “We hopefully learned a lot from this humbling experience and try to move forward. The challenge is for me, and our staff, to look for ways to close the gap. Today, we took a big punch in the gut, but I am confident we will stand back up and recover.”

Wilmington’s lone score came late in the third quarter when Luke Creditt hooked up with Ameer Jackson on a 32-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone, and Kevin Schamp added the extra point kick. For the game, Creditt was 14 of 23 in pass attempts for 151 yards. Jackson was the leading receiver with six catches for 64 yards.

Mount Union generated more than 600 yards in total offense to the Quakers 146 net yards. The Purple Raiders starting signal caller D’Angelo Fulford was perfect on the day, completing all 14 of his passes for 268 yards and six touchdowns.

Wilmington High School product David Henry pounced on a Purple Raiders fumble in the end zone, thwarting Mount Union’s sixth straight scoring series. He also forced a fumble and had five tackles.

Leading the defensive effort on the day was senior C. J. Thompson with 11 tackles and Tre’Quez Parks had seven tackles in the contest.

Creditt had a busy afternoon punting, with a total of eight for 310 yards, including his longest of 58 yards which tied a personal best he achieved earlier in the season.

“Now the focus is on Heidelberg, and we go there next week. They took it on the chin, losing to a Marietta squad that we stayed with, and had a chance to beat, before coming up 10 points short. Sure, my guys are down right now, but our team will not quit. Our task is to keep improving and moving forward.”

Wilmington’s final home game of the 2017 season will be Nov. 4 against Ohio Northern, and they will close out the regular-season at Muskingum on Nov. 11. Ohio Northern squeaked by Muskingum, 7-6, on Saturday.
