Local bike rodeos to promote safety

CLINTON COUNTY – For the fifth year, the Clinton County Health District has received a grant for bike helmets from the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) to promote Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Month throughout the month of May.

In 2010, the number of people injured by not wearing a bike helmet was 51,000, enough people to fill Nationwide Arena in Columbus 2½ times. Apart from automobiles, bicycles are tied to more childhood injuries than any other consumer product including trampolines, ladders and swimming pools.

Two Clinton County community bike rodeos are planned as part of the statewide public awareness campaign, “Put a Lid on It”:

• Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Denver Williams Park in Wilmington, the Wilmington Kiwanis Key and Aktion Clubs, the Wilmington Bicycle Club and Wilmington Parks and Recreation will host their fifth annual event.

• Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m.-noon at Putman Elementary in Blanchester, the Blanchester Lions and the Blanchester Public Library will host their second annual event.

Sponsors for these events include the Blanchester American Legion Auxiliary Marion Unit 179, Blanchester Masonic Lodge #191, Blanchester Council No.134, JR, QUAM along with the Clinton County Board of Health.
