CEDARVILLE – The Wilmington College men were 10th and the women 12th Saturday in the Friendship Invitational cross country event Saturday morning at Cedarville University.

Junior Cameron Phelps paced the WC men with a 49th place individual finish.

Wilmington, the only NCAA Division III institution at the invitational, finished 10th out of 16 teams with 322 points. Host Cedarville won the meet with 41 points.

Phelps finished the eight-kilometer race in 27:43.9. Freshman Evan Whitaker finished two spots behind Phelps with a time of 27:48.1.

“I thought we ran pretty well for our first 8K as the conditions were tough with the heat,” head coach Ron Combs said. “Big personal bests for Cameron [Phelps] and Evan [Whitaker]. I’m very happy for those two.”

Sophomore Gage Clemens was the next Wilmington runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 106th place with a time of 29:16.8. Austin Wampler (29:41.3) and Jacob Whitaker (29:44.8) rounded out the Quakers top five with times.

Justin Moakler of Morehead State University won the event individually with a time of 25:25.0.

Wilmington has a week off before heading to Akron for the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships Sept. 29.

For the WC women, freshman Katie Hughes finished the five-kilometer race in 21:20.4.

Wilmington, the only NCAA Division III institution at the invitational, finished 12th out of 16 teams with 327 points. Morehead State University won the meet with 32 points.

Alison Helmke (22:21.7) and Savannah Rhodes (22:33.5) were the next Wilmington runners to cross the finish line.

The Quakers’ fourth and fifth-place finishers were Kendra Stahl (23:21.9) and Jenna Kostecki (25:38.7).

“Our No. 1 Katie [Hughes] ran really well and we had a solid pack behind in the 2-4 spots,” Combs said. “We need to be better in the fifth spot than we were today. Nevertheless, I’m encouraged with our improvement from last season.”

Sierra Poppell of Morehead State University won the event individually with a time of 18:13.1.
