Wilmington’s offense was simply too much for East Clinton Friday night as the Hurricane throttled the Astros, 59-0 at Alumni Field.
The Hurricane accumulated 471 total yards in offense, while holding the Astros to just 31 total yards. Wilmington scored four consecutive passing touchdowns, the first going to Conner Mitchell and the next three to Cameron Coomer. On the night, Coomer had 174 yards through the air.
The second touchdown catch of the night was an acrobatic, over-the-shoulder, one-handed catch by Coomer from signal-caller Brady Evans. WHS was able to build a 21-0 first quarter lead and came back with a 24-point second quarter, which included a Brady Henry field goal at the gun. Wilmington took a 45-0 lead into the locker room.
On the night, Evans accounted for five of the Hurricane touchdowns, four in the air and a one-yard rushing TD late in the second quarter.
WHS head coach Scott Killen was pleased with his team production, saying it was something they have worked very hard on in practice this past week.
“We felt like we had to get it going and get some rhythm,” said Killen. “We achieved that. Defensively, we knew that East Clinton would run the ball and we wanted to give pressure. We allowed just two rushing first downs. The key for us is to keep getting better each week. We’ll get to see what we are made of next week. New Richmond will be a challenge.”
With the point-differential being more than 30 points, the entire second half was played with a running clock, allowing Killen to insert several younger players into the contest.
Freshman Isiah Rigling had a 65-yard TD reception from Mason McIntosh who took over at quarterback in the third quarter, and freshman Malik Scott scored on an 11-yard rushing touchdown to complete the Hurricane scoring. Parker Henry, another freshman, booted the PAT following Scott’s touchdown.
On the other side, the offensive woes continue for the Astros and head coach Jeremy Yankey. His squad encountered match-up problems with Wilmington from the start.
“We’re playing a lot of freshmen and younger kids,” said Yankey. “It’s not making any excuses, it’s just where we are right now. Defensively, when you give up four passing touchdown as quickly as we did, we dug ourselves a big hole.”
Yankey is glad the first half of the season is now behind his team, and feels they will be able to match-up better with Williamsburg, on the road next Friday.
As mentioned, the New Richmond Lions provide the opposition for Wilmington and it will be Homecoming week for the Hurricane, now sporting a 3-2 record.
