WILLIAMSBURG — An unstoppable Williamsburg rushing attack proved to be too much for the East Clinton Astros to overcome Friday night.
Williamsburg rushed for 340 yards on 50 carries and scored touchdowns on its first six drives in a 40-10 win over East Clinton.
The win was the first for Williamsburg in the new Abrams Stadium.
The only drive that didn’t end in a score for the Wildcats (2-4) was the drive that ran the clock out to end the game.
East Clinton (0-6) got the scoring started when Austin Rolfe concluded the first drive of the game with an eight-yard touchdown run.
“We have some decent athletes that we can get the ball to in space and move it like we did,” EC head coach Jeremy Yankey said. “We just have no margin for error because we don’t stop people.”
Williamsburg’s offense scored the next 19 points. Two Loghan Kelley touchdown runs and a Dakota Milton run gave Williamsburg a 19-7 lead.
An Austin Arellano 37-yard field goal pulled the Astros within 19-10 at the intermission.
However, the size mismatch on the offensive and defensive lines caught up with the Astros in the second half.
“We cannot match up with opponents up front on either side of the ball,” Yankey said. “That makes it really tough.”
Williamsburg used its advantage to grind down the Astros defense.
Three Williamsburg rushing touchdowns in the third quarter put the game away as the Wildcats opened up a 40-10 lead.
It’s been a familiar story for the Astros in 2018, Yankey said.
“Unless our offense scores almost every possession, it’s hard for us to compete,” Yankey said. “We don’t have the personnel on either side of the line of scrimmage. If you don’t win the line of scrimmage, you can’t compete.”
Williamsburg held East Clinton to just 39 yards rushing on 20 carries.
