County grads run in D3 Great Lakes Regional

A pair of Clinton County high school products competed for the Wilmington College women’s cross country team in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional meet Saturday.

Clinton-Massie graduate Katie Hughes and Blanchester graduate Savannah Rhodes ran for WC. Rhodes finished in 24:45.8 and Hughes clocked in at 24:59.3 in the 6K race.

Claire Lamb of Otterbein University won the regional title individually with a time of 20:58.7, beating the entire field by more than 13 seconds. Baldwin Wallace University won the team regional title with 114 points.

On the men’s side, Wilmington was 22nd out of 38 teams. Calvin College (Mich.) won the regional championship as a team with 56 points.

Cameron Phelps was the top Wilmington finisher, completing the 8K course in 26:39.9 and a 79th-place finish. Evan Whitaker, the second team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree, finished in 128th with a time of 27:15.0.

Clinton-Massie grad Jacob Whitaker (27:24.4) finished less than 10 seconds behind Evan in 140th place. Ryan Honkomp (27:26.2) and Gage Clemens (27:42.8) rounded out the Quakers’ top five finishers.

Individually, Ian McVey of Ohio Northern University won the regional crown with a time of 24:52.5.
