WHS baseball to take part in Barnhill Classic Saturday

The Wilmington High School baseball team is scheduled to play in the 4th Kevin C. Barnhill Coaches Baseball Classic Saturday in Maineville at Testerman Park.

The Hurricane will play Kings at 12:30 p.m. then Little Miami at 3:15 p.m.

The games are played at Kevin C. Barnhill Championship Field.

Cost of admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students. Children under 6 are admitted free.

The Classic is one of several major fundraisers for the Kevin C. Barnhill Memorial Scholarship and Community Outreach Fund which currently awards eight annual scholarships to Warren County senior student/athletes.

The main community outreach component of the Fund was the construction, operation and maintenance of the Kevin C. Barnhill Championship Field in Maineville built in partnership with the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund and Major League Baseball. The field is entering its 11th full year of operation and hosts more than 150 games annually.

The genesis of the Classic was a decision by the respective head coaches of Kings (Kevin McClung) and Little Miami (Matt Craig) high schools to annually play their rivalry game at a neutral site and with that raise monies for the fund.

Kings and Little Miami students are beneficiaries of the scholarship program. A third team is invited to make the three-way with the third team usually having some connection with Kevin, the Reds or our family. WHS athletic director Troy Diels played basketball at Ohio Northern University with Kevin Barnhill.

Barnhill passed away at the age of 27 in 2006.
