WC women battle Berg to 1-1 tie

TIFFIN — The Wilmington College women’s soccer team, competing for the first time in nearly 500 days, battled Heidelberg University to a 1-1 draw in double overtime Sunday.

Both teams fired four shots at the net in the first half, but it was the Student Princes who had one on target as Audrey Kaufman beat Lauren Galloway in the 38th minute. Wilmington trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Wilmington, which held an 8-3 edge in shots in the second half, answered midway through the period. Heidi Edens took two consecutive shots on goal near the 60th minute. The first one was saved by Heidelberg netminder Meredith Bruce, but the second wasn’t as Edens evened the score in the 61st minute.

The Quakers were the more offensive side in both overtime periods, but couldn’t deliver a game-winning goal and the two teams each earned a point after 110 minutes of soccer.

Galloway faced five shots on goal making for saves. Offensively, Hayes and Edens combined for 11 shots, eight of which were on goal, while Audrey Kaufman fired four shots for Heidelberg.

Wilmington fired 17 total shots to Heidelberg’s 10 as well as having a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Quakers (0-0-1) will head to Muskingum University for a 7 p.m. Thursday match.
