Sonbeams tour Port William station

0

The Sonbeams Adventurer Club of the Wilmington Seventh-day Adventist Church was treated to a tour of the new fire station in Port William from firefighter Kenny Stryker.

The children saw the inner workings of the fire department, the equipment they wear, the washer and dryers they use to clean their fire suits, the machine to fill the oxygen tanks and the machines to wash and dry the hoses, the rescue vehicle and the fire trucks.

The children got to go into the life squad and were also shown how the EMTs and firefighters load and unload the gurney. The highlight was crawling into the fire truck and hearing the sirens.

Firefighter Kenny showed the children the cutting tool used to take the roof off a car and they had the chance to try and hold the Jaws of Life.

At the end of the tour, the children were treated to cookies and juice as well as firefighter hats and a bag of goodies. Kenny told the group that they were the first group of children to tour the new fire station.

The children, their leaders and parents are grateful for the opportunity to see what could be potentially “scary” equipment, noises and gear in a non-threatening, comfortable environment as well as the job that all our firefighters and EMT’s do to keep us safe.
