MARIETTA — An 0-for-14 second quarter shooting performance, doomed the Wilmington College women’s basketball team Saturday in a 68-46 loss to nationally-ranked Marietta College in Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Fightin’ Quakers opened the game by hitting four of their first five three-pointers to take a 12-4 lead, but the visitors would be held to just a single field goal over the next 15 minutes of action – an Elise Carpenter jumper late in the first quarter.
The Pioneers ended the quarter by scoring on three consecutive possessions and took a 30-18 lead into halftime. Wilmington would turn an 18-point deficit late in the third quarter into an 11-point one on another Lewis triple with 5:33 remaining in the game, but Marietta ended the game on a 15-3 run.
Marietta shot over 40 percent both from the field and from beyond the three-point arc while Wilmington was under 30 percent in both of those areas. The Pioneers also made 16 free throws to Wilmington’s five, but the Quakers won a close battle of the boards 42-41.
Kennedy Lewis led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from distance. Zahrya Bailey added a team-best eight rebounds for Wilmington.
For Marietta, Erin Hahn tallied a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Olivia Gribble was the other Pioneer in double figures with 13 points.
Wilmington (6-7, 2-4 OAC) finishes a five-game road swing at Muskingum University on Wednesday.
