BLANCHESTER — With a change in ownership, a local cemetery is in need of tidying up.

A community workday is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, to get the I.O.O.F. Cemetery cleaned up and ready for Memorial Day.

The cemetery in the village of Blanchester has been operated and maintained by the I.O.O.F lodge.

The village was notified in November that the I.O.O.F lodge in Blanchester was being closed.

“Since the village is required by state statute to take over the operation and maintenance of the cemetery, our solicitor and I.O.O.F attorney has been working on getting the deed prepared to transfer ownership of the property,” stated Mayor John Carman in a news release.

The village took temporary ownership on April 21 at a special council meeting. Due to the timing of this action, the village was not able to get a jump on mowing until recently.

“We ask for your patience and understanding during this time,” said Carman. “We will do our best as we work through this transition period.”

Any and all helping hands are needed to shape up the cemetery, and volunteers are asked to bring rakes, wheel barrows, and weed trimmers if possible.

Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Blanchester Eagles 2222 new building at 210 Lazenby St. Lunch will be provided by the Blanchester Eagles.
