BBK Final: Waynesville 70, Wilmington 63

WAYNESVILLE — Taking advantage of its opportunities at the free throw line, Waynesville defeated Wilmington 70-63 Saturday night in non-league boys basketball action at the Warren County gym.

Wilmington is 4-16 on the year. The Hurricane has lost two in a row and three of its last four.

Waynesville goes to 13-6 and has now won four straight.

The Spartans were 32 for 48 at the free throw line. After a 2 for 5 performance in the first, Waynesville went 7 for 11, 10 for 15 and 13 for 17 each quarter the rest of the way.

The Hurricane posted a 20 for 28 free throw performance but were just 5 for 11 in the final period after going 15 for 17 through three quarters.

WHS was whistled for 33 fouls, with Bryson Platt, Stevie Rickman and Chase Fickert fouling out.

Down 34-27 at halftime, the Hurricane rallied in the third period.

Chase Fickert and Jose Morales had six points each in the third and Wilmington made all nine of its free throws to forge a 48-48 tie.

But in the fourth, Wilmington struggled at the line while Waynesville flourished. Kaden Christenson and Tanner Hatmaker scored seven each in the final period as the Spartans held on for the win.

Jose Morales had 19 points for Wilmington. Waynesville put four players in double figure scoring but none more than 13. Four Spartans made at least six free throws.
