Clinton-Massie softball lost four standout seniors from last season’s district runnerup team.
Coach Brandon Lewis, in his second year, knows it’ll be hard to replace Kayla Drake, Kiera Brightman, Dee Schneder and Sam Bowman.
Brightman (12-8, 136 K, 126 IP) and Drake (.646 average, 12 HR, 28 RBI) were first-teamers in the SBAAC. Schneder was second team. Brightman.
Sydney Doyle (.532 average, 9 HR, 39 RBI) is the top returning player for the Falcons, who have seven letterwinners and six starters coming back. She also was first team in the SBAAC.
Clinton-Massie last won the crown in 2018, sharing top honors with Western Brown.
The Falcons were 13-9 last season in Lewis’ first year as head coach. This year he’ll be assisted by Nick Sandlin at the varsity level and by junior varsity head coach Chase Lewis.
McKenna Branham “is the quiet leader for the Lady Falcons,” Lewis said. “She is someone who comes to work every day and gives you everything she has. She works hard in practice whether that is fielding, hitting in the cage or giving positive encouragement to her teammates.”
With Brightman gone, the CM pitching will be “a work in progress,” said Lewis. “We have to figure out who is next up.”
Massie also will have to hit better as a team in 2023 if it is to improve on 2022.
Said Lewis he wants this team to “continue to get better practice by practice and game by game. You always want to improve your overall record year over year as well but (that) will be a challenge for sure this year.”
