The Peace Resource Center at Wilmington College is coordinating a panel discussion on the popular new Christopher Nolan film, “Oppenheimer,” following its screening in Yellow Springs this Sunday evening.
The panel discussion will be held at the Little Art Theatre at 9 p.m., following the 6 p.m. showing of the film. The panel discussion is free of charge while ticket-holders who attend the movie will have the first option for seating.
The date marks the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. Dr. Tanya Maus, director of the Peace Resource Center, will lead the discussion in person and will be joined via Zoom by Malachi Nelson, co-director of the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima.
The nuclear disarmament abolitionist, Barbara Reynolds, founded both the World Friendship and Peace Resource centers. The PRC houses her archives and the internationally recognized Hiroshima-Nagasaki Memorial Collection. Reynolds and her husband resided in Yellow Springs during the 1930s and ’40s before moving to Hiroshima for work.
Nelson oversees a range of WFC programs and activities aimed at fostering peace and understanding among individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
Maus holds a Ph.D. in modern Japanese history from the University of Chicago and has taught numerous history courses on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japanese imperialism in East Asia. In her work at the PRC, Maus seeks to expand the local, regional, national and international awareness of the experience and danger of nuclear war.
