Two recycling programs available to local residents

WILMINGTON — With the holidays upon us, the Solid Waste Management District recently shared the rules for the two recycling programs available to residents in Clinton County.

For those who live within the city limits of Wilmington, residents have the option of curbside recycling available through the City of Wilmington’s Sanitation Department. Special blue containers are provided to residents to place their recyclables in and should be placed at the curb next to the trash containers. Only items specifically stated in the provided image should be placed in these containers. If it’s not pictured, then it cannot be recycled in this program.

For those who live outside the City of Wilmington’s boundaries, residents can still recycle at home through Clinton County’s drop-off program. The county operates six locations across the county where residents can bring home recyclables. Each location has anywhere from one to 12 large, green, co-mingled dumpsters with specific, instructive labels on each side. Only items specifically stated in the provided image (same as the label on the dumpsters) should be placed in these containers. If it’s not pictured, then it cannot be recycled in this program.

Both programs have very similar rules, but the main difference is how corrugated cardboard is handled. The City of Wilmington’s curbside recycling program accepts clean cardboard (free of food, grease or packaging materials) in its co-mingled carts.

The county’s drop-off recycling program requires that corrugated cardboard (free of food, grease or packaging materials) be placed in separate blue dumpsters near the rear of the lot, located at 1274 W. Main St., Wilmington (near the fairgrounds).
