WILMINGTON — It was a historic night for girls high school wrestling in Clinton County Thursday at Wilmington College’s Fred Raizk Arena.
Wrestlers from all four county schools participated in the county duals, the first time each school had a female wrestler competing against other female wrestlers as part of an official school-sanctioned team.
“This is groundbreaking,” said Clinton-Massie girls head coach Cindy Running. “These girls are breaking all new ground, new territory and it is awesome.”
On the mat, Wilmington defeated Clinton-Massie 30-24 in the official county duals team championship.
Running was a long-time assistant coach for boys wrestling at Clinton-Massie as well as athletic director at CMHS.
“I found out these girls are fierce competitors, they really are,” she said. “I definitely wanted to see our girls going out (tonight) and making a good showing and I think they did. They had an impressive showing.”
Ryleigh Burns of East Clinton had two first-period pins. “She did a great job in her first time competing,” East Clinton coach Doug Stehlin said.
There were forfeits in the opening matches as coaches and wrestlers alike continue to find their best fits.
And there also was fiery competition, perfectly executed moves and forelorn faces in the aftermath of defeat. There were several girls who participated against boys in the co-ed matches at the varsity and junior high levels just to get matches in.
“Wrestling is so good for all aspects of your life, personal goal setting, personal growth,” Running said. “We think it’s a great thing to be a part of. Some of these girls are in other sports, but not winter sports. This is giving them an opportunity to grow their core strength, their competitiveness. This gives them an opportunity to be competitive during the winter and so far the girls are absolutely loving it.”
