WILMINGTON — A single-vehicle accident Tuesday morning on South South Street and State Route 134 in Wilmington has left the driver hospitalized, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

The accident, which occurred approximately 150 feet north of Cuba Road, saw the vehicle veer off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle then traveled north through grass and gravel, ultimately striking a telephone pole near the intersection of South South Street and SR 134 S. The impact caused the pole to snap off at the base and at the location where it was supporting utility wires and a streetlight.

Following the crash, the vehicle continued through the intersection and veered west across South South Street before coming to a final rest in the ditch in front of 975 S South St.

Authorities believe that the driver experienced a medical emergency, which may have contributed to the accident. The driver was subsequently flown via CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. At present, the driver’s condition remains unknown.

The roadway was closed for several hours to facilitate pole replacement and utility line repair, with normal traffic resuming at approximately 5 p.m., as confirmed by the Wilmington Police Department.

Initially, the outage resulting from the damaged pole impacted 1,301 customers. However, as of the latest updates, the power has been restored, with only two customers currently reported to be experiencing an outage, according to the AES outage map.
