WILMINGTON – In a move that may disappoint some, the City of Wilmington has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated Nerf in the Park event, scheduled for June 15, according to a news release.

The decision comes after the city’s insurance provider, the Miami Valley Risk Management Association, advised the city’s policy does not include coverage for events involving projectile shooting, even when using non-lethal items like Nerf balls.

“While we understand the disappointment this may cause, the safety of our community is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for the city. “We must follow the advice of our insurer and cannot proceed with an event that poses an unacceptable risk.”

“The well-being of our participants is paramount,” the spokesperson continued. “We simply cannot proceed with an event that could potentially result in harm.”

The city emphasized that it remains committed to providing engaging and safe recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, according to the release. The city is currently exploring options to reschedule the Nerf in the Park event, once appropriate insurance arrangements can be made.

“We share in the disappointment of those who were looking forward to this event,” the spokesperson concluded. “But we believe this is the responsible course of action to ensure the safety of our community.”
