Peace officers memorial service set for May 13

WILMINGTON — The 2024 Wilmington Peace Officers Memorial Service is scheduled to commence at 1 p.m., Monday, May 13. National Police Week is May 12-18.

Again this year, the service will gather on the front lawn of the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 50 E. Locust St.

Organizers will remember Patrolman Emery McCreight near the site where he was mortally wounded. Marshal John Van Doren and five other members of the department who died while still actively serving will also be remembered, as will Wilmington Police Sgt. Ian Brown and Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Dave Maple.

In addition to designated on-street parking. the church’s parking lot at the southeast corner of Locust and Walnut streets will be available to those attending the memorial service.

Refreshments will be served in the Municipal Building’s Robert Moyer Community Room following the memorial service. The Moyer Community Room will be the alternate site of the memorial service in case of inclement weather.
