LEES CREEK — Washington Senior shifted into Aaron Greer and rode the bruising 6-1, 230-pound back to a 22-21 come-from-behind victory at East Clinton Friday.
Greer had the Lion’s share of the carries on an 11-play drive that ended with his 3-yard plunge and a 21-21 tie midway through the final period. Alex Trombold’s PAT gave WCH (3-2, 2-0) the lead for good.
East Clinton (2-3, 0-2) had two more chances to take the lead. The first opportunity ended after three plays and a punt. Greer and Timothy Robinson then helped chew the clock with a nine-play drive that ended on downs at the EC 14 with 55 seconds to go in the contest. The Astros made it to midfield before a WCH interception as time expired.
The Blue Lions jumped out to a 15-0 lead, scoring on the first drive of the game and a 69-yard pick six, before EC responded with 21 straight points.
EC answered the pick six with a 13-play drive capped by a 6-yard scoring strike from Erik Moore to Brian Barnes. Both had key third-down plays to keep the drive alive, Barnes a one-handed grab on 3rd-and-19 at the EC 41 and Moore a 20-yard scramble at the WCH 38.
The Astros cut WCH’s lead to 15-13 two minutes later when Barnes snatched the Blue Lions’ handoff in the backfield and sprinted 60 yards to paydirt.
EC took its first lead of the night on the second play of the fourth quarter, making WCH pay for another fumble, on Moore’s 2-yard plunge.
Washington Court House retook the lead on the ensuing drive.
The Blue Lions are winners of three straight after dropping their first two games of the season.
