WILMINGTON — Led by Sam Spirk, the Wilmington High School boys soccer team overwhelmed Preble Shawnee 7-0 Saturday at Alumni Field.

“Our boys showed up to play Saturday even though it was their Homecoming day,” said WHS coach Imad El-Macharrafie. “We thought they may come out a little loose but they were pedal to the medal for 90 minutes. All in all this was a team win.”

Sam Spirk had three goals and a like number of assists while Charlie Schumacher had two goals and two assists. Avery Greenlees and Wyatt Kessler also scored for the Hurricane. Seth Gundlach and Kessler recorded assists.

Kaden Laufer posted the shutout as Wilmington improved to 7-2-1 on the year.

“Winning the ball in the back, securing possessions while distributing from the midfield and finishing the ball in the back of the net is what makes this team click,” said El-Macharrafie. “We’re beginning to fire on all cylinders and it’s very fun to watch.”
