It was not the atmosphere either team expected as two county rivals squared off at Alumni Field Friday night in South Central Ohio League football.
Playing in extremely adverse conditions, including a driving rain storm, Wilmington posted a 35-0 victory over the East Clinton.
The Hurricane is now 5-1 on the season. East Clinton falls to 2-4 on the season.
“I’m proud of the way the kids played, especially with the weather conditions. We had to rely solely on the running game, we couldn’t even think about passing. I’m glad that we were able to get out of the game healthy with no injuries and keep building some momentum,” said WHS Scott Killen after the contest.
Wilmington got on the scoreboard with just under 7:00 to play in the first quarter on a 16-yard run by Cam Stewart. Brady Henry tacked on the PAT making it a 7-0 game.
After Wilmington forced East Clinton to punt on the next series, the Hurricane’s Austin Camp blocked Dylan Wilson’s punt at the 1. Stewart scored his second TD at the 5:04 mark, and Henry’s PAT made it 14-0.
Wilmington added its third touchdown of the quarter on a 29-yard screen pass to Stewart on a fourth and 10 play with 1:48 remaining. Henry’s PAT boot gave WHS a 21-0 advantage.
Wilmington scored its fourth touchdown of the night on a 9-yard run by quarterback Matt Creditt with just under 4:00 to play in the half. Henry successfully booted his fourth PAT of the night giving WHS a 28-0 lead at the intermission.
D.J. Ames added Wilmington’s final touchdown at the 5:55 mark of the fourth quarter and Henry’s kick closed down the scoring.
East Clinton was able to move the ball into Wilmington territory at the 3:00 mark of the 4th quarter and got the ball down to the 7 yard line before turning it over on downs.
Wilmington will go on the road for it’s next two games facing a pair of Fayette County-rivals.
Next Friday, WHS travels to Gardner Park facing Washington Senior. The Blue Lions struggled against Clinton Massie last night losing 50-6.
Then on Oct. 16, WHS goes to Miami Trace before returning to Alumni Field against SCOL leader Clinton-Massie in its final home game of the season Oct. 23.
