WHS Theatre’s ‘Newsies’, ‘Servant’ deliver

The Wilmington High School cast and crew of “Newsies” was well represented at the Miami Valley High School Theatre Awards Tuesday at the Schuster Center in Dayton.

Jenna Allemang, along with students from other schools in the Miami Valley, represented WHS in the opening number “We Got the Beat” from the show “Head Over Heals.” After being selected as an “Outstanding Musical”, cast members from “Newsies” were invited to perform the musical (tap) number “King of New York”, which showcased first in the lineup.

In addition to “Newsies,” Wilmington High School also received the award for an Outstanding Production of a Play – “The Servant of Two Masters” — as well as Outstanding Ensemble for both “Newsies” and “The Servant of Two Masters.”

Many students also took home awards, receiving a certificate and a medal at the end of the evening:

For “Newsies”, these include: Merit for Lead Actress in a Musical, Layna Tippett; Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical, Riley Ibaugh and Dalan Toups; and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical, Alex Vail.

For “The Servant of Two Masters”, these include: Merit for Lead Actress, Vanessa Calderone; Outstanding Lead Actor, Riley Ibaugh and Alex Vail; Merit for Lead Actor, Jaden Snyder; Outstanding Supporting Actress, Carly McCoy; and Merit for Supporting Actress, Lindsay Lydy.

“It was a wonderful night of celebrating high school theatre in the Miami Valley and showcasing student talent,” said WHS teacher/director Ken Lydy. “Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of both ‘The Servant of Two Masters’ and ‘Newsies’ for all their hard work this season. A big thank you to the production team as well — Gina Sheldon, Tara Lydy, Timothy Larrick, and Matt Spradlin.

“We are looking forward to next year as Wilmington High School presents ‘Clue: for the Stage’ in November (2022) and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘Oklahoma!’ in March (2023),” said Lydy. “We will also present a second musical production in April, which is yet to be determined.”

This annual event is sponsored in part by Dayton Live. All the winners from the event can be found on the Miami Valley High School Theatre Awards page at https://mvhsta.org/showcase .
