LORE CITY, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team lost two games Saturday afternoon to the Marietta College Pioneers, 5-3 and 6-5.

The games were played at Buckeye Trail High School due to the poor field conditions at Marietta.

The Quakers held a 3-0 lead in game one, but couldn’t hang on to it, while game two saw Wilmington tie Marietta late only to lose by one.

The Quakers are 13-12-1 overall and 1-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

In game one, Maddie Starnes had two hits and three runs batted in for WC, including a pair in the first inning and another in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Aiyana Hancock threw all six innings in the circle for Wilmington and struck out three Pioneers.

In the second game, Marietta took a 3-0 lead before Wilmington started its comeback with a run in the top of the second on an Alasandra Spears single to center field.

Wilmington hit a pair of homeruns in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game when Judaea Wilson and Spears both hit their first homeruns of the season. The Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-3 advantage.

Wilmington scored with two outs in the fifth as Kori Cornett doubled and Jocelyn Franz singled her in to cut the lead to 6-4. The Quakers scored one more run in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough.

Cornett and Spears both had two hits while Spears and Franz each had two RBI.

Hillary Huffer struck out four in 3.2 innings in the circle before Cornett pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings in relief.

The Quakers finish a busy week at Muskingum University today with a noon doubleheader.
