The underground railroad

What was the underground railroad? I hope you were not totally sleeping when there was a discussion about slavery in the history class. Slavery had become a division of South and the plantation system against North and the industrial development. Many folks also had a problem of the “ownership” of human beings and the treatment of same. After the horrible conflict of the Civil War, many books have been written about all phases of the conflict. I believe we must look at history and try to find an authority who has “the whole story.”

My family ‘hair-itage’

There is a name for people in our lives that bore us with stories about famous people they know. My friends and family call that braggadocios blowhard, Steve.

Turning the dream of homeownership into a reality

In traveling across the Buckeye State, the topic of housing continues to be top of mind for our fellow Ohioans.

The expanding global crisis

Editor’s note: Jeffrey Owens is a Jeffersonville native, a 1995 graduate of Miami Trace High School and 2000 graduate of Ohio University. As a lifelong history buff, Owens published “Victory In Europe; A People’s History of the Second World War”, a more than 700-page analysis of World War II in Europe in 2015. Since 2015, Owens has hosted more than a dozen educational symposiums on a variety of military history topics at the Grove City Library. He is a resident of New Holland.

Are there too many rules?

Do we have too many rules? Rules and laws are supposedly put in place to create a more structured and safe “society for all.” Do our public officials sometimes get carried away and create a structure of rules that may or may not last in perpetuity? When Sugar Grove Cemetery was dedicated in 1859, the rules for the cemetery were published in The Wilmington Watchman March 10, 1859. Do we still need to obey? I find no record that any of the rules have been deleted. The following rules were approved by the cemetery board of directors.

Cutting IRS red tape for Ohioans with online businesses

After months of pressure, the IRS has agreed to again delay the implementation of new, burdensome rules that increase tax paperwork for Ohio’s smallest businesses and entrepreneurs.

Where are you from?

Where are you from? Have you ever been asked this question? Have you lived somewhere other than Clinton County? How much do you know about the history of Clinton County? All of these questions are to, hopefully, get your brain cells in motion. The article for November has nothing to do with all of we “foreigners.” YES, I said foreigners because unless we can answer we are 100 % Native American (Indians), we came from somewhere else.

Stopping another bad trade deal

Once again, a White House was trying to push through a trade agreement behind closed doors with no enforceable labor standards. The good news is, this time we put a stop to it.

Pro-lifers, are you awake yet?

I have read and heard many reactions to the recent passing of Issue 1. Most pro-lifers I know have expressed anger, shock, frustration, and grief.
